The short answer

Rodding pokes a hole through a blockage; jetting removes it. Drain rods are cheap, DIY-friendly and fine for a soft blockage near a chamber. High pressure jetting cuts through compacted fat, scale, silt and roots and washes the whole bore of the pipe clean, so the blockage does not quickly re-form. If a drain has been rodded and blocked again, jetting is almost always the right next step.

Ask two neighbours how to clear a blocked drain and one will hand you a set of drain rods while the other tells you to get it jetted. Both are right, for different blockages. The two methods work in genuinely different ways, and knowing which suits which problem saves money in both directions: you avoid paying for a professional visit a £20 set of rods would have solved, and you avoid rodding the same drain four times when one jetting visit would have ended the cycle. Rodding: how it works and how to do it properly

Drain rods are flexible poles, usually about a metre long, that screw together end to end so you can push a tool head along a drain from a manhole or inspection chamber. The two standard heads are a rubber plunger disc, which pushes a column of pressure against the blockage, and a corkscrew worm head, which bites into soft material so you can break it up or drag some of it back. A basic set costs little, lasts for years, and for the classic domestic scenario, a soft blockage of paper and waste sitting within a few metres of an accessible chamber, it genuinely works.

Technique matters more than strength. Open the chamber nearest the blockage on the upstream side, so the water level tells you which run is blocked: a full chamber sits upstream of the problem, an empty one downstream. Screw the head to the first rod, feed it into the mouth of the blocked run, and add rods one at a time as it advances. Then the one rule everybody who has lost rods down a drain wishes they had known: always turn the rods clockwise as you work, never anticlockwise. The joints are screw threads, and anticlockwise rotation unscrews them, leaving a rod and head jammed in the pipe, which turns a blockage into a blockage with a steel skeleton. Work with steady push and pull strokes rather than shoving. When the blockage gives way you will feel it, and the water in the chamber will drop with a satisfying pull. Finish by flushing the run through hard, a hose in the chamber or several buckets, so the loosened material actually leaves the system, then wash your rods and your hands like you mean it.

Where rodding stops working

Rodding has honest limits, and they explain most of its failures. Reach is the first: a set of rods covers roughly ten metres in a straight line, less in practice once the run has bends, and rods do not turn tight corners willingly. Position is the second: rods need an access point on the right side of the blockage, and a blockage under the middle of a long garden run, far from any chamber, may simply be out of reach. The third limit is the important one: what rodding does to the blockage it hits. Against compacted fat, scale or root growth, a rod head punches a channel through the middle and the water starts moving again, which feels like victory. But the pipe is still lined with the material that caused the problem, the channel narrows as new waste catches, and a few weeks later the drain is blocked in the same place. Forcing rods against a collapsed section or a hard obstruction can crack old clay pipework and turn a clearance into a repair.

Jetting: how it works

High pressure water jetting takes the opposite approach: instead of pushing at the blockage from behind a pole, it uses water at very high pressure through a specialised nozzle. Rear-facing jets propel the hose along the pipe, around bends and over distances no rod set can manage, while the forward action cuts through the blockage itself. The nozzle then works back along the run, stripping fat, scale and silt off the pipe walls and flushing the lot downstream. That is the fundamental difference between the methods: jetting does not make a hole through the problem, it cleans the pipe back to its full bore. Different nozzles suit different jobs, from de-greasing a kitchen run to cutting root fibres, and the operator controls the pressure to match the pipework. Which should you choose?

As a rule of thumb: rod first when the blockage is new, the chamber is accessible, and there is no history of trouble on that run. It is cheap, quick and often enough. Choose jetting, or call someone who carries it, in five situations. When rodding has already failed, or cleared the drain only for it to block again within weeks. When the blockage is fat or grease, because piercing fat is a two week fix at best. When the blockage is beyond rod reach, down a long run or past multiple bends. When the drain serves a kitchen or a commercial premises, where grease is guaranteed. And when the same run has blocked more than twice in a year, because at that point the sensible visit pairs jetting with a camera look at the pipe, and a CCTV drain survey will show whether roots, scale or damage is behind the pattern.
